Lot Essay

An homage to Rembrandt's masterpiece of etching from 1655, and a stunning piece of printmaking in its own right. The figure of Pilate, centre stage, is also Picasso. The spectators are a mixture of the artist and the women he loved. All his world is but a stage, on which he acts, observed by himself and the women who have provided so much of his inspiration.
