Lot Essay

This lot demostrates Picasso's continued interest in the theme of two figures in an interior, one seated awake, and the other recumbant, soundly asleep. The treatment here, however, is much more disturbing than usual. The end result of one of his celebrated series of lithographs this image began as an intimate portrayal of two young women. After 18 successive modifications it has become nightmarish, with the young girl at the right apparently held prisoner by the insect like creature at the left.
