THEODORE ROOSEVELT, COLONEL OF THE ROUGH RIDERS

A fine three-quarter length portrait of Colonel Theodore Roosevelt attired in his Rough Rider uniform complete with riding gloves and campaign hat. The uniform of the Rough Riders bore very little resemblance to the standard blue uniform of the Regular Army. Dressed in brown trousers, blue flannel shirts, slouch hats and boots, the Riders adopted a style befitting the American West, as Roosevelt himself noted: "they looked exactly as a body of cow-boy cavalry should look" (The Rough Riders, Modern Library edition, p. 24).

Provenance: Paul C. Richards, 1983.
