HOOVER, Herbert (1874-1964), President. Printed document signed on the verso ("Herbert Hoover") as President, a PRESIDENTIAL SALARY CHECK, Washington, DC, 31 January 1930. 1 page, an oblong (3¼ x 8 3/8 in.), a light green Treasury Department paycheck for $6250 boldly labeled "Treasurer of the United States" with departmental seal, stamped endorsement across signature, otherwise in very fine condition.
PRESIDENT HOOVER'S PAYCHECK ISSUED IN THE MIDST OF DEPRESSION
Three months after the stock market crashed on Black Thursday, President Hoover received his substantial paycheck for $6250. By January of 1930, Americans were already feeling the pinch of a collapsing economy. Within a few months, four million workers would find themselves unemployed. The President and his Administration refused to grasp the severity of the economic crisis, offering the nation promises that the worst had passed. Unfortunately, Hoover's failure to confront the situation immediately only allowed it to grow much worse.
Presidential salary checks are quite uncommon. According to ABPC, no other Hoover salary checks have been offered at auction in the last 25 years.
