The pictorial field containing stylised rocks and trees around a pagoda together with cloudbands in a golden yellow border containing Chinese motifs between zigzag and plain stripes, slight wear in the metal thread

Lot Essay

The inscription translates: "For Imperial use in the Palace of Cloudless Heaven".
A similar rug, with a differently drawn version of the same scene and with the same inscription, was exhibited in 1973 (Imperial Carpets from Peking, exhibition catalogue, Pittsburgh, 1973, pl.6, pp.22-23).
