A Berlin Royal circular portrait plaque of Queen Louise Of Prussia
Circa 1810-15, underglaze blue sceptre mark, painter's iron-red mark, Pressnummer 41
Painted with a half-length portrait of the Queen slightly turned to her right, her hair in ringlets and wearing a crown with pendant pearls, a pearl necklace, white dress with yellow sash and a blue wrap, within a rectangular chased gilt band cartouche against a richly gilt ground, the ground painted with a bronzed garland of roses resting on the cartouche and pendant at the sides and with a bronzed crown issuing poppy seed heads and foliage below (minute flake to gilding below crown), mounted in a brass frame with ring for suspension (the ring and frame damaged and repaired)

Lot Essay

This portrait of Queen Louise is after the portrait by Ternite at Schloss Grünewald. Louise (1776-1810), the daughter of Charles II, Duke of Mecklenburg-Streliz (see lot 267), married Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm (later King Friedrich Wilhelm III) in 1793. Her death in 1810 triggered a massive out-pouring of national mourning and patriotic fervour.
