In the manner of Angelica Kauffmann, the rectangular top with chamfered corners, painted in the center with an oval reserve depicting Venus and Cupid, surrounded by swags of husks and cameo portrait medallions, with a border of anthemion, the frieze fitted with a drawer, painted on all four sides with classical figures, griffins and vases with gilt beaded borders, supported on giltwood legs carved with stiff leaves and joined by a similarly painted shelf stretcher with entrelac border, on paw feet, the drawer stamped 'BERTRAM & SONS DEAN STREET/OXFORD ST W/02120'

Lot Essay

The firm of William Bertram and Son, established in Soho in 1830 and located at 100 & 101 Dean Street, specialized in brass-inlaid and marquetry furniture.

A pair of closely related tables of identical design but with variation to the painted decoration is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (62.6.1-2), formerly from the collections of Sir Samuel Scott, Westbury Manor Northamptonshire and Viscount Downe, Wykeham Abbey, Yorkshire.
