Lot Essay

As an established painter of historical and contemporary scenes, Rochussen addressed a new theme, that of falconry, around 1850. He belonged to the intimate circle around King Willem II and king Willem III and was frequently invited to the royal palace Het Loo. Hawking events organised by the palace inspired the artist to execute a number of paintings, drawings and watercolours, of which the present lot is an example. The elegant group are members of the Royal Loo Hawking Club on the Soerense Heide and the lady portrayed in the middle could be identified as Queen Sophie (see M. Halbertsma, Charles Rochussen 1814-1894, een veelzijdig kunstenaar, Zwolle 1997, p.123).

We are grateful to Mr S. Fuks for his help for cataloguing this lot.
