EINSTEIN, Albert. Über die Entwickelung unserer Anschauungen über das Wesen und die Konstitution der Strahlung. Offprint from: Verhandlungen der Deutschen Physikalischen Gesellschaft, XI. Jahrgang, Nr. 20. Braunschweig, 1909. 8o. Original tan printed wrappers. FIRST EDITION, AUTHOR'S PRESENTATION OFFPRINT ISSUE. See BRL 28 (simultaneously published in Physikalische Zeitschrift, X, 817-825).
Pais 'Subtle is the Lord'... (p. 402) refers to these two papers as "profound." Concerning these papers Pais cites the following quotations from Einstein: "I already attempted earlier to show that our current foundations of the radiation theory have to be abandoned . It is my opinion that the next phase in the development of theoretical physics will bring us a theory of light that can be interpreted as a kind of fusion of the wave and the emission theory . Wave structure and quantum structure are not to be considered as mutually incompatible . It seems to follow from the Jeans' Law that we will have to modify our current theories, not to abandon them completely."
The profundity of these two papers can be best understood by realizing that the "fusion" that Einstein refers to is now called, "complementarity." The reference to Jeans' Law would now be termed an application of the Correspondence Principle. BRL 27 & 28. (2)
