FERMI, Enrico (1901-1954). The beginning of a legendary career in physics, including some of Fermi's greatest contributions to theoretical physics. Early in his career Fermi decided that in addition to having his papers published in the relatively obscure Italian scientific journals he should also send the text of papers that he considered of wide interest to the Zeitschrift für Phyik to insure wider distribution of his ideas; thus German editions of various papers were published.
This collection 10 offprints was presented by Fermi to his schoolmate at the University of Pisa, the Italian mathematician Luigi Fantappie (1901-1956), whose relatively short life paralleled Fermi's almost exactly. Fantappie's career was distinguished and his collected works were published in 2 vols., 1973. THE RARITY OF THE OFFPRINTS OF THESE INITIAL PAPERS CANNOT BE OVERESTIMATED. Three of these offprints have presentation inscriptions by Fermi. V.p., 1921-1930. 8o. Most in original printed wrappers. Provenance: Luigi Fantappie (inkstamps on wrappers).
Sulla dinamica di un sistema rigido di cariche elettriche in moto traslatorio. Offprint from: Nouvo Cimento, Serie VI, vol. XXII. Pisa, 1921. FIRST EDITION, offprint issue. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY FERMI on the title-page: "All'amico Luigi Fantappie con affetto E.F." Fermi's first published paper written when he was still an undergraduate. It concerned the "Dynamics of a Reigd System of Electrical Charges in Translational Motion." Fermi, Collected Papers, no. 1
Sull'elettrostatica di un campo gravitazionale uniforme e sul peso delle masse elettromagnetiche. Offprint from: Nuovo Cimento, Serie VI, Vol. XXII. FIRST EDITION, offprint issue. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY FERMI on the title-page: "All'amico Luigi Fantappie con affetto E.F." This was Fermi's second published scientific paper, related in subject matter to no. 1. It "determines, by the methods of general relativity, the effect of a uniform gravitational field on a system of electric charges. It turns out that the charges have a weight equal to that of a material mass U/c2 (where U is the electrostatic energy of the system) a perfect agreement with Einstein's principle of equivalence between mass and energy". (Fermi, Collected Papers, ed. Segrè p. 1, no. 2)
Sopra i fenomeni che avvengono in vicinanza di una linea oraria. Offprint from: Reale Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, Vol. XXXI, serie 5a, 1o sem, fasc. 1o. Rome, 1922. In a wrapper for another, later, paper. FIRST EDITION, offprint issue. "In 1922, while still in Pisa, Fermi had obtained remarkable result in general relativity by showing that, in the vicinity of a world line, space is Euclidean. This theorem is Fermi's first accomplishment of permanent value; it is contained in the paper 'On the Phenomena Occuring near a World Line' " (Segrè, Enrico Fermi, Physicist, 22). The so-called "Fermi Coordinates" that Fermi introduced in this paper were extended by various other scientists. Fermi, Collected Papers, no. 3.
Beweis das ein mechanisches Normalsystem im allgemeinen quasi-ergodisch ist. Offprint from: Physikalische Zeitschrift, 24 Jahrgang. [Göttingen,] 1923. FIRST EDITION, offprint issue. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY FERMI on the first page: "con affettuoti saluti. "One of a group of papers on analytical mechanics that Fermi completed in Gottingen. Fermi, Collected Papers, no. 11.
Sopra la teoria di Stern della costante assoluta dell'entropia di un gas perfetto monoatomico. Offprint from: Reale Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, Vol. XXXII, serie 5a, 2o sem, fasc. 11o. Rome, 1923. FIRST EDITION, offprint issue. Fermi's first paper on the entropy constant of the perfect monatomic gas. Fermi, Collected Papers, no. 16.
Sulla probabilit deglie stati quantici. Offprint from: Reale Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, Vol. XXXII, serie 5a, 2o sem, fasc. 12o. Rome, 1923. FIRST EDITION, offprint issue. Fermi, Collected Papers, no. 17
Zur Quantelung des idealen einatomigen Gases. Offprint from: Zeitschrift für Physik, Band 36, Heft 11/12. Berlin, 1926. FIRST EDITION, offprint issue. This is "probably his [Fermi's] most famous theoretical contribution, where he formulated the theory of an ideal gas of particles obeying the Pauli exclusion principle, now designated in his honor as 'fermions' (F. Rasetti in Fermi, Collected Papers no. 31). This paper was preceded by a short note in Italian. "It is well-known that Dirac developed this type of statistics independently of Fermi. Dirac's paper [see lot 67] was presented at the Royal Society on August 256, 1926, whereas Fermi's short notewas presented on February 7 and his longer paper was received by the editor of the 'Zeitschrift" on March 26. Thus both of Fermi's publication antedate Dirac's by an appreciable time. Fermi statistics, which are applicable to electrons, protons, neutrons, and all particles of half integer spin, have a pervading importance in atomic and nuclear physics and in solid-state theory" (DSB).
