MEITNER, Lise. Der Zusammenhang zwischen \Kb\k- and \Kg\k-Strahlen. In: Ergebnisse der exacten Naturwissenschaften, 3 Band. Berlin, 1924. Unopened. 8o. Original printed wrappers (some fraying to edges and spine, minor soiling). Provenance: The Janus Foundation (bookplate). FIRST EDITION. On the connection between beta and gamma radiation. In 1924 Meitner was concentrating on "the technically difficult investigation of radium; by June 1924 the beta spectrum and Meitner's analyses were complete" (Sime, Lise Meitner, p. 99)
MEITNER, L. and Max DELBRÜCK. Der Aufbau der Atomkerne. Natürliche und künstliche Kernumwandlungen. Berlin, 1935. 8o. Original printed wrappers (minor soiling). FIRST EDITION. A monograph on nuclear structure by Meitner and her assistant Max Delbrück, written four years before Meitner and Otto Frisch's discovery of nuclear fission. Meitner's biographer Ruth Sime notes that the monograph was attacked by an anti-Semitic reviewer for Naturwissenschaft, who condemned it for containing a "grave error"-the error being a mistaken photo credit for the illustration on p. 33, corrected in the errata slip preceding that page. Delbrück later turned his attention to molecular biology, sharing the 1969 Nobel Prize in medicine or physiology for his work on genetic recombination in bacteriophage viruses; see G-M 2578.5. Sime, Lise Meitner: A Life in Physics, pp. 132; 151. Pais, Inward Bound, p. 386. Biog. Enc. Scientists (Delbrück)

MEITNER, L. and Otto R. FRISCH. On the Products of the Fission of Uranium and Thorium under Neutron Bombardment. Copenhagen, 1939. 8o. Original printed wrappers (very minor fading). FIRST EDITION. Meitner and Frisch co-discovered nuclear fission in early 1939. Following Meitner and Frisch's epochal announcement of their discovery of nuclear fission in January 1939, published in the journal Nature, the two carried out a series of experiments at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, designed to determine whether or not all of the so-called "transuranium elements" described by Fermi and others were actually products of the fission of bombarded uranium or thorium nuclei, and thus isotopes of lighter elements. The present paper gives a detailed account of these experiments, in which Meitner and Frisch found this to indeed be the case; "for elements that were truly transuranic, one would have to look elsewhere" (Sime, Lise Meitner, p. 267).
