FIRST EDITION, British issue, THE AUTHOR'S HEAVILY ANNOTATED AND REVISED COPY, with 136 of its 188 text leaves bearing Soddy's annotations or copy-editing symbols, made either in manuscript or on numerous typewritten sheets which have been tipped-in. All of the plates have been edited by Soddy, some with figures removed, and there is an added frontispiece with two portraits of John Dalton. A revised periodic table is tipped in at the end and a typed "Instructions to the Printer" is tipped in at the front. According to notes in this copy, Soddy also prepared a typescript containing rewritten versions of several sections, including chapters XII through XV. These typescripts are not present here.
Only one edition of The Interpretation of the Atom appeared in print, making it likely that Soddy adandoned his plan to issue a revised edition. His revisions indicate that he wanted to cover advances in the field, and suggest that they were made in the period of 1940-45, a particularly rich period which culminated with the detonation of the atomic bomb. It is possible that this revised copy was once owned by Soddy's friend Muriel Howorth, to whom he gave all his papers and bequeathed the copyrights of his published works.
