8o. Folding map printed in red and black. Original black cloth (lightly rubbed, corners bumped, few short tears at ends of spine); pictorial dust jacket (lightly rubbed and soiled, small abrasion on spine panel). Provenance: John Crown (presentation inscription).
FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY FAULKNER TO JOHN CROWN on the front free endpaper: "To John from Bill." ADDITIONALLY SIGNED by Faulkner on the title: "William Faulkner in Oxford Nov 24 1936." Absalom, Absalom! was published in late October 1936, also in a limited signed issue of 300 copies.
Absalom, Absalom! was the first major novel brought out by Random House, which promoted Faulkner more aggressively than any of his previous publishers.
Inscribed copies of Absalom, Absalom! are SCARCE, with only two recorded at auction in the last thirty years according to American Book Prices Current (1982, inscribed to Richard R. Kilroy, Jr. and 1977, inscribed to Malcolm Cowley [Goodwin copy]). Massey 2; Peterson A18.2b.
