8o. (Some light scattered foxing.) Original bronzed pebble-grained cloth, gilt-lettered on front cover (slightest sunning to spine, generally very fine). Provenance: Margot Adamson (presentation inscription); First Editions Unlimited (sold Christie's New York, 9 December 1993, lot 23).
FIRST EDITION OF FROST'S FIRST COMMERCIALLY PUBLISHED BOOK. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY FROST TO MARGOT ADAMSON on the front free endpaper: "Margot Adamson from Robert Frost Oct 4 1913." This is the first issue (distinguished by collation) and the first binding. Of the 1,000 copies printed, no more than 350 were bound in this first binding. David Nutt went into bankruptcy after the First World War and the remaining unbound sheets were acquired by Simpkin Marshall & Co.
Frost, known for his poems of New England, was actually born in San Francisco and had his first two books published in England after a five-year stint trying to farm in New Hampshire while attempting to have his poetry published. A Boy's Will follows his first publication, Twilight, an 1894 pamphlet printed in two copies and of which only one copy is known. Three years after the publication of North of Boston, his second collection, Frost returned to New England, his reputation firmly rooted. Crane A2.
