FIRST EDITION OF GREENE'S FIRST PLAY. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY GREENE TO DOROTHY DEWHURST on the front free endpaper: "To Dorothy Dewhurst gratefully from Graham Greene. June 3, 1953." Dewhurst was a prominent actress in London, and the present is apprarently her rehearsal copy, as it has last-minute text changes and stage directions throughout. ADDITIONALLY INSCRIBED BY THE ENTIRE CAST of the first production (16 April 1953) on the cast list. Dorothy Dewhurst played the lead role as "Mary." Greene participated in the staging and presumably Dehurst's textual emendations were made under his supervision. Wobbe A29a.
