FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY JAMES TO W.E. NORRIS on the front free endpaper: "To W.E. Norris his affectionate old friend Henry James Nov. 3 1911."
Norris was a minor Victorian novelist who met James in Torquay in the early 1890s. On an 1893 trip to Cornwall to visit Leslie Stephen, James detoured to see Norris. He wrote to Edmund Gosse: "I stopped on the way down here (St. Ives) to spend three days with Norris, which were rendered quite charming by the urbanity of my host and the peerless beauty of Torquay, with which I fell in love" (Henry James, Letters, ed. Leon Edel, vol. III, p.485). James wrote an annual Christmas card to Norris beginning in 1900, a number of which appear in Edel's edition of the Letters. BAL 10673; Edel & Laurence A70.
