KEROUAC'S RETAINED COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION. Kerouac signs his name and inscribes his mother's telephone number on the half-title: "Jack Kerouac 343-1541." INSCRIBED BY KEROUAC TO RONNY LOWE on the front flyleaf: "To Ronny Lowe from old buddy Jack Kerouac 5/22/69." It is further inscribed "Jack's copy" in another hand beneath Kerouac's inscription.
Lowe was a childhood friend from Lowell. At the time of this inscription, Kerouac was in Florida, living out his final days with his mother and sister. After he inscribed it, he failed to send it to Lowe. It surfaced after his death and remained with his wife Stella Sampas until 1992, when it went to her brother John. No later Kerouac inscription is recorded, making this perhaps the last book he inscribed. Charters A25.
