8o. Original boards stamped in black, with printed paper spine label, uncut; with the rare plain cream dust jacket (slight darkening to edges).

FIRST EDITION, number 19 of 1000 copies signed by Lawrence. The publication of Lady Chatterley is both a poignant and frustating tale. The first edition was printed by Lawrence himself as a speculative business venture. He commissioned the Tipografia Guintina in Florence to print the book. Orioli and Lawrence enacted a word-of-mouth advertising campaign to attract subscribers, hoping effectively to evade the bad press incumbent on a Lawrence work. Orioli, Lawrence's Florentine friend and bookseller, used his small private press not only to produce Lady Chatterley, but also as a headquarters for future Lawrence projects.

Cyril Connolly, in his assessment of Lady Chatterley in The Modern Movement, recommends it be read in conjunction with Lawrence's letters. Though Connolly feels the novel is "marred" by Lawrence's "passionate didacticism," his summation is resoundingly positive: "Even without the eroticism it is a fascinating and well-planned novel rich in post-war observations and character portrait" (page 58). Roberts A42a. A VERY FINE COPY WITH THE SCARCE DUST JACKET.
