WARREN, Robert Penn. You, Emperors, and Others. Poems 1957-1960. New York: Random House, 1960.
8o. Original black cloth (endleaves slightly spotted); printed dust jacket (few short tears at edges, small chip at head of spine, light soiling). Provenance: JOHN CROWE RANSOM (presentation inscription).
FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY WARREN TO JOHN CROWE AND ROBB RANSOM on the front free endpaper: "To John & Robb with love from Red Fairfield, Connecticut, October 24, 1960." And with the second line on p.36 revised by Warren.
Although Warren would later win two Pulitzer Prizes for his verse, this volume shows his humble beginnings as a published poet. In an interview with Richard B. Sale at Yale University, Warren confessed that "I've made some very bad slips, such as in the volume of poems called You, Emperors, and Others." Nevertheless, the present association is highly significant, as Ransom, Warren's professor at Vanderbilt University, proved a strong influence on Warren's writing.
