James Frank Sullivan was also a contributor to The Strand: a writer of supernatural short stories, his work appeared in its pages frequently. He published two collections of his Strand stories in his lifetime The Flame-Flower and other Stories (London, 1896) and Queer Side Stories (London, 1900).

"Wells has been called a 'modern myth-maker' as well as the 'father of modern science fiction'" (Adam H. Frost, introdution to the NY: Dover, 1997 edition). This archetypal story of alien invasion provided a model for countless cruder imitations. Its famous radio adaptation by Orson Welles was realistic enough to cause widespread panic in 1938. Following The Island of Dr. Moreau (1896) and The Invisible Man (1897), The War of the Worlds first appeared serially in Pearson's Magazine (April-December 1897). Wells 14.
