8o. Title-page printed in blue and black. Original blue cloth, gilt-lettered on spine, printed boards (light edgewear and soiling). Provenance: Jesse Greenstein (presentation inscription; signature on front pastedown dated 1932).
FIRST EDITION, LIMITED ISSUE, ONE OF ONLY 15 COPIES BOUND IN CLOTH, this copy number 25 of an edition of 500. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY WEST TO JESSE GREENSTEIN on the limitation page: "For a lousy stinker--Jesse Nathanael West," with an illustration beneath of a crucified Christ under the INRI legend.
Born Nathan Weinstein, West alterred his high school transcript in order to be admitted to Tufts University. He withdrew from the school and again doctored his transcript to enter Brown University. He changed his name, he told Williams, because: "Horace Greeley said, 'Go West, young man.' So I did." He published four novellas in his short life: the present work, Miss Lonelyhearts, A Cool Million and The Day of the Locust. West's first book was published on the strength of William Carlos Williams's recommendation. VERY RARE IN CLOTH: no other copy bound in cloth appears in ABPC for at least a quarter century.
