8o. Original burgundy cloth, gilt-lettered on front cover and spine (a bit rubbed, hinges weak, some wear at extremities). Provenance: George Monroe, Wharton's European banker (presentation inscription; letter from the scholar RNB Lewis detailing the association laid-in).
FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY WHARTON TO HER EUROPEAN BANKER GEORGE MONROE on the front free endpaper: "To George Monroe with the kindest regards of Edith Wharton Nov. 11th 1913." With three minor corrections, possibly by Wharton, on pp. 147, 244 and 245. The book was issued simultaneously in the U.K. and U.S. on 18 October 1913.
George Monroe and his brother Harry were Wharton's bankers during her years abroad. Their Paris office at 7 Rue Scribe was her official overseas mailing address. In a 1920 letter, Wharton wrote of Harry's death and George Monroe's serious illness: "I have hardly any space in which to thank you for sending flowers to poor Harry Monroe's funeral... George M. is pretty ill too, and has gone to Paul for the whole winter" (Edith Wharton, Letters, ed. R. and N. Lewis, p.437). Garrison A21.
