FIRST EDITION, second printing. INSCRIBED BY ALEX HALEY TO CHARLES FERGUSON on the front free endpaper: "To Charles W. Ferguson--from whose years of guidance, friendship and brilliant teaching-editing I've hugely and gratefully benefited... whose article assignment led me to meet Malcolm X [p.389], which ultimately led to this book's existence. Respectfully and sincerely, Alex." With black-and-white photo of Haley laid-in. Ferguson was the editor at Reader's Digest who commissioned Haley to contact Malcolm X. Their meeting precipitated the close relationship which resulted in Malcolm X's autobiography. (2)
