Lot Essay

The present cup and saucer appears to be one of three extant examples from what must have been a small service. All are virtually identically decorated and marked. Two were owned by the 6th Earl of Roseberry and sold by Sotheby's on the premises of 'Mentmore' in 1977 as lots 2117 (the present example) and lot 2118. The third is in the collection of HRH Queen Elizabeth of England (Geoffrey de Bellaigue, Sèvres Porcelain from the Royal Collection, Exhibition Catalogue, The Queen's Gallery, London, 1979, no. 123).
