Lot Essay

The present ice pails are from a service for iced punch designed in the Egyptian revival style popularized by the Napoleonic campaignes. See Reinhold Baumstark, Thurn und Taxis Museum Regensburg, Höfische Kunst und Kultur, Bayerisches Nationalmuseum, no. 105D for an example by Paul Dagoty in the Turn-und-Taxis Collection, Regensburg; also Régine de Plinval de Guillebon, Faïance et porcelaines de Paris, XVIIIe - XIXe siècles, Paris, 1995, fig. 370 for the nearly identical design produced by the rival Paris firm of Caron & Lefebvre.

A very similar pair of ice pails, marginally shorter but broader than the present examples and with a variant internal construction, was sold as lot 380A in The Arts of France; Christie's New York, 26 October 2001.
