Lot Essay

The suggestion of Jean-Baptiste-Claude Séné as the menuisier of these chairs is based upon the unusual use of the Ionic capital to the top of the stiles of the back which is also present on a suite of seat furniture currently housed in the Louvre, see B.G.B. Pallot, Furniture Collections in the Louvre, vol. II, Dijon, 1993, fig. 57, p.162. This suite, although decidedly more elaborate in its decoration, and originally at Chateau St. Cloud, share similar proportions and some design characteristics with the offered suite in addition to the unusual aforementioned leitmotif.

Another possible maker, based upon the proportions of the seat and decoration of the rail and leg, is Jean-Baptiste Bellet, maître 10 April 1782. A chair of related scale is illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIII Siècle, Paris, 1989, p.53.

A pair of bergères which are essentially identical ecxept for differences to the arms and finials to the toprail and which are almost certainly by the same maker, from the collection of M. Hubert de Givenchy, sold Christie's Monaco, 4 December 1993, lot 85 (FFr 333,000 - US$ 56,000).
