Comprising a three light candelabrum and a pair of candlesticks, the cast supports modelled with two romantic pastrol figures, pendants hung from pierced foliate circlets, mounted on white marble plinths -- 15in. (38cm.) high (3)

Lot Essay

Arthur H. Hayward, Colonial and Early American Lighting, Dover Publications Inc, 1962, plate 44. Similar gilt metal mantel lustre garnitures were made by Cornelius and Company of Philadelphia around 1825. The designs were inspired by popular novels of the day, such as characters from J. Fenimore Cooper's 'The Deerslayer'. One theme was known as the "Paul and Virginia" set.
