Lot Essay

H.Mawer & Stephenson are listed in The Dictionary of English Furniture Makers, FHS and Maney, 1986, though no address is recorded. The name has appeared twice previously on lots offered in these rooms, a Louis Philippe console table, Lot 364, November 25th 1998, and a carved giltwood and composition overmantel mirror, early 19th century, Lot 419, September 13th 2000. The latter bore a label including the address 1-9 Lillie Road, London, SW. It seems likely that the company were funiture brokers and depositories rather than makers.
