The rectangular padded back, outscrolled arm and seat with cushion covered in petit point needlework with figures amongst foliage, on cabriole legs headed by eagles' heads and leaves, on talon-and-ball feet, formerly with casters, the legs with splices, possibly constructional

Lot Essay

This settee with Jupiter's eagle monopodiae is designed in the 'antique' manner associated with William Kent (d.1748). An early Georgian chair similarly carved is in the Duke of Norfolk's collection at Arundel Castle (see S. Jervis, 'Furniture at Arundel Castle', The Connoisseur, March 1978, p. 213). Another eighteenth century mahogany chair from the collection of Frank Crozer Knowles, Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, was sold Christie's London, 7 July 1994, lot 146.
