This settee with Jupiter's eagle monopodiae is designed in the 'antique' manner associated with William Kent (d.1748). An early Georgian chair similarly carved is in the Duke of Norfolk's collection at Arundel Castle (see S. Jervis, 'Furniture at Arundel Castle', The Connoisseur, March 1978, p. 213). Another eighteenth century mahogany chair from the collection of Frank Crozer Knowles, Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, was sold Christie's London, 7 July 1994, lot 146.
