Lot Essay

The octagon teapoy has Grecian-scrolled legs in the antique fashion introduced around 1800, and is embellished with picturesque vignettes within foliated borders that are inspired by Grecian vases. A similar romantic vignette of a Gothic castle features on a George IV box illustrated in an exhibition catalogue issued by Hyde Park Antiques, Penwork; The Triumph of Line, New York, 1989.
