Lot Essay
A pair of pier tables probably supplied by Thomas Chippendale for the drawing room at Appuldurcombe, Isle of Wright features tops with similarly feathered medallion with sunflower center and elaborate scrolling floral motifs (C. Gilbert, The Life and Works of Thomas Chippendale, New York, 1978, vol.II, p.273, fig.499). A pembroke table with serpentine top with inlay of a central shell surrounded by husks and floral sprays was sold by Henry Vyner, Esq., Christie's London, 5 July 1990, lot 143 (£12,100). A closely related design dated 1784 for a pembroke table with related inlay appears in the Estimate Books of Gillow of Lancaster and London (L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs, Royston, 1995, fig. 61).
A similar pembroke table with central nautilis from Langleys, Essex, attributed to maker Charles Elliott and sold Christie's London, 4 July 1991, lot 147 (£30,800) and is illustrated in L. Synge, Mallett Millennium, London, 1999, p.181, fig.227. Another less elaborately rendered but with similar character to the wide floral-inlaid borders was sold Sotheby's London, 4 July 1997, lot 68 (£27,600).
