Lot Essay

The present work relates to a panel painting by Raphael which was executed circa 1511-1512 and resides in the Pinacoteca Apostolica, in the Vatican, Rome. Dobson entered the Royal Academy schools in 1836 and this work has been dated to within around five years of that date. The frame is thought to be Dobson's own design.
