The exterior shows at the edge that the black ground is formed by a thick intense manganese underglaze painting which is then covered with a thin very slightly yellow glaze.
A very similar smaller bowl with the same roundels and colouring but lacking the secondary flaring motifs was excavated at Samarkand (Terres secrètes de Samarcande, exhibition catalogue, Paris, 1993, no.184, p.100).
