On flat foot, the black interior painted in red and white slip with rosettes divided by flaring motifs, the upper half of the exterior plain black, unglazed around the foot, one section missing, generally excellent glaze surface

The exterior shows at the edge that the black ground is formed by a thick intense manganese underglaze painting which is then covered with a thin very slightly yellow glaze.

A very similar smaller bowl with the same roundels and colouring but lacking the secondary flaring motifs was excavated at Samarkand (Terres secrètes de Samarcande, exhibition catalogue, Paris, 1993, no.184, p.100).
