Few large Raqqa carved pottery vases are decorated, as here, with more than one colour. One example is in the Victoria and Albert Museum which adds lustre decoration to the underglaze blue stems (Lane, Arthur: Early Islamic Pottery, London, 1947, pl.60a). The present example is unusually large and voluptuous in form.
