Lot Essay

The phrase Alladhi khalaqa al-samawati wa'l-ard fi sitta ayam- He it is who created the heavens and the earth in six days- appears four times in the Qur'an: sura VII, v.54; X, v.3; XI, v.7; LVII, v.4.
It is a reference to the book of Genesis and a sentiment echoed in Judaism and Christianity. Another Fatimid beam with this inscription was sold in these rooms, April 23 2002, lot 141.
With its bevelled ends this panel must come from a rectangular construction, possibly a minbar or doorway.
See also footnote to lot 32.
