Lot Essay

The Gurgan finds include a bowl of the same form as this with its moulded ogival panels and blue and black painted details (Bayani, Mehdi: Gurgan Faiences, Cairo, 1949, pl.XXX) , and a similar cup was sold at auction in Paris in 1985 from the Charles Kettaneh Collection. in contrast to both of these however the present bowl includes the piercing of the centre of each panel and the enamelling around the piercing. As a combination this is exceptionally rare. It is also remarkably complete, particularly bearing in mind its delicacy.
