The square sectioned capital carved with two rows of fleshy volutes in high relief, good condition

Lot Essay

This unusual capital with a double row of volutes may have its origin in the type of capitals employed in the 10th century. This type occurs in both the Great Mosque of Kairouan in Tunisia and in that of Cordova. In both cases, the volutes are considerably simpler than those on the present example.
