AN ABBASID LUSTRE POTTERY BOWL
Probably Samarra, Mesopotamia, 9th century
Of rounded form with slightly everted rim on short foot, the white interior painted in golden lustre with a highly stylised bird, its wings formed of a stylised split palmette, a further strong part palmette below, on a ground of small V-shaped motifs, a band of simple lobes around the rim, the exterior with radiating floral designs within stylised arcading, the kufic word "baraka" under the foot, repaired clean breaks, slight fading of glaze
7 7/8in. (20.1cm.) diam.
