A MAMLUK CARVED SANDSTONE PANEL
Probably Syria, 14th Century
Of rectangular form, the face carved with a large floral spray terminating in a bold palmette, a panel above containing a stylised inscription, in a border of continuous naskh calligraphy, repaired breaks
32¼ x 13 3/8in. (82 x 34cm.)

Lot Essay

The main upper inscription panel reads: Allah baqi (God is eternal). Around the sides is written the throne verse (Qur'an, sura ii, v.255). The cross-band dividing the two main panels is inscribed: qala al-nabi..... (the Prophet said....).
