Lot Essay

Sultan Khalil Khan was the Aqquyunlu ruler and son of Uzun Hasan. He ruled for only one year from 882-3 (1478 AD). The name Jalal-al Din is not recorded. The Aqquyunlu ruled Diyar Bakr, Eastern Anatolia and Azerbayjan. Another manuscript in his name is in the Chester Beatty Library.

This fragment of a very fine manuscript contains very beautiful illumination and miniatures in the Turkman style.
The miniatures are:
Shirin sees Khusrau's portrait
Iskandar fighting the Zangis
Majnun in chains brought to Leili's camp
Majnun in the wilderness with the animals
Farhad and Shirin on Mount Bisitun
A prince and a princess on a throne (possibly a scene from Haft Paykar) Sultan Sanjar and the old woman
Iskandar lassoing Kintal the Russian champion
One of the seals on the opening folio is of Azim al-'Umara known as Aristu Jah, the prime minister of Nizam 'Ali the ruler of Hyderabad 1762-1803.
