Starting before the War, he became the partner of Dorothy Hammerstein when she opened an office in New York in 1939. On his return he set up Louis W. Bowen Inc. a company which manufactured speciality wall coverings. Originally taking his inspiration from childhood memories, he turned increasingly to the East, around which he travelled finding numerous new influences, translating them into designs for clients' interiors. His own Park Avenue apartment reflected this eclectic mixture with a combination of of East Asian artefacts, European, mostly French furniture and Iznik pottery. The other contents of the apartment were sold at Christie's New York 5 September 2002.

This is a most unusual dish both for the colouring and also for the combination of motifs. The border design is one normally found with radiating central designs comparable to that of lot 316 or 371. Here the centre is remarkable with its exuberant display of leaves and not a flower to be seen.
