Lot Essay

Pewter mounts are occasionally encountered on Iznik jugs and are difficult to date. Similar mounts are found on two jugs published by Atasoy and Raby (Atasoy, Nurhan and Raby, Julian: Iznik, the Pottery of Ottoman Turkey, London, 1989, pls.150 and 600).

The design on this unusually large jug, with its paired flowers, one overlaying the other, divided by a leaf, is on which was adopted with slight variations in numerous jugs of the seventeenth century, mostly considerably lacking the execution seen here.
