AN IZNIK POTTERY DISH
Ottoman Turkey, circa 1580-90
With sloping rim on short foot, the white interior painted in blue with a central roundel containing a lattice surrounded by five cusped panels containing red floral sprays on a ground of spiralling motifs, the cavetto with a band of cusped motifs, in a stylised wave and rock border, the exterior with simple alternating blue roundel and trefoil motifs, two cracks, foot and rim drilled, very minor retouched rim chips

Lot Essay

This dish shows a wonderfully refined use of the colour red to highlight the medallions in what is otherwise a monochrome design. The central roundel is most unusual. It resembles that of lot 334 in this sale; for a further discussion please see the note to that lot.
