Ansel Adams conceived Portfolio IV, "What Majestic Word," as a tribute to friend and renowned conservationist Russell Varian. Both men worked to secure "the natural beauty of the redwoods" that they believed was invaluable. The photographs of magnificent landscapes in Portfolio IV were intended to raise funds for the acquisition and preservation of what is now Castle Rock State Park in Northern California, Varian's long-desired dream. With the aid of Sempervirens Fund, California's oldest land conservancy and the first organization to preserve land for the protection of the coast redwood tree, sequoia sempervirens, Varian's dream became a reality in 1959. Almost forty-five years later, Sempervirens Fund has consigned Varian's personal Portfolio IV to aid in reaching its new goal of securing permanent protection for the San Lorenzo River Redwoods. The transferral of this outstanding redwood and riparian parcel of 1,340 acres to Castle Rock State Park will mark a victory for not only Russell Varian and Sempervirens Fund, but for Adams, as his artistic vision will have resulted in the preservation of land of "inestimable spiritual and recreational value."
