Louis XVIII, (755-1824) was king of France from 1795. He was the younger brother of Louis XVI and married Princess Louise of Savoy in 1771.

Louis XIV (1638-1715) was king of France from 1643 and was known as 'The Sun King'. The reign of Louis had been the longest in European history. It was an age of French literature and art.

Louise Françoise de Labaume Leblanc, Duchesse de La Vallière (1644-1710) became Louis XIV's mistress in 1661 and bore him four children. She was superceded by Marquise de Montespan in 1647 and retired to a Carmelite nunnery in Paris.
