The first of deep blue jasper with a portrait bust of Charles Renold Berch to the right and impressed BERCH, 2¼ in. (6 cm.) high; the second of paler blue jasper, of Elizabeth Montagu to the right, her head covered with a veil, 1½ in. (4 cm.) high (2)

Lot Essay

Berch (1708-1777) was a celebrated Swedish antiquary, historian, numismatist and political economist. Elizabeth Montagu (1720-1800) was a famous beauty, 'blue-stocking' and woman of letters. See Robin Reilly and George Savage, Wedgwood, The Portrait Medallions (London, 1973), pp. 62 and 246.
