Circa 1750
Modelled as a youth in wide-brimmed hat, hooded jacket and long boots, seated on a pedestal on an octagonal base applied with a flowerhead and foliage to the front (his left hand and end of instrument restored replacements, chip to right hand, hat, right boot and flowerhead and foliage of base)
4½ in. (11.5 cm.) high

Lot Essay

Cf. Bernard Watney, 'Snowman figures from Longton Hall, Staffordshire', Antiques, August 1974, Vol. CVI, no. 2, Fig. 17 where he illustrates and discusses the example in the Katz Collection, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

It is derived from a bronze by Giovani Bologna (1529-1608), the model also appears in Bow.
