Lot Essay

Cf. Frederiks, J.W., Dutch Silver, part II, The Hague, 1958, no. 419, illustrated, for an earlier, slightly smaller, almost identically engraved counter box made by the anonymous master of the flower in Dordrecht in 1602.
This box is preserved in the collection of the Royal Cabinet of Coins in The Hague and was exhibited in the Hague Municipal Museum in 1952, no. 194. The catalogue describes the box as 'een busje voor het opbergen van rekenpenningen'.
