A rare musical box by Weill and Harburg
playing ten airs including three from La Mar des Violettes and Faust Marche Militaire, accompanied by drum, seven bells and castanets, with horizontal brass tune-indicator, Van Gruisen retailer's label and reverse-painted glass coat of arms to inside lid, in crossbanded rosewood veneered case with inlaid front and lid -- 26in. (66cm.) wide, the cylinder 16in. (41cm.), (one bell replaced)

Lot Essay

The patented tune-indicator usually associated with Weill and Harburg is formed by a panel with a narrow window and a rotating drum behind. The titles of the tunes are printed on the drum, which is turned by a cord linkage attached via a hooked rod to the cylinder.
