Lot Essay

A forte-piano musical box of more conventional type, but with the same changeable-cylinder mechanism, was sold in these rooms on September 13 1978 (lot 216). The great-wheel lock on this type has a single lobe engaging the teeth, with a knob and small dial. There is no fail-safe lock to prevent the cylinder being removed before this lock is engaged, as there is on the Lecoultre box (Lot 480)

Moulinié Ainé musical boxes are rare in themselves, and usually of very high quality, although it is likely that he was not an actual maker. Similarities have been pointed out with Langdorff designs. The 1978 example had no name, but the serial number was 6157, confirming that the two are likely to have emanated from the same maker
